MOL reaffirms its commitment by becoming a Gold Donor of the ‘Museo del Galeón’

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL), a leading global shipping company, today announced its commitment as a Gold Donor of the eagerly anticipated Museo del Galeón (Galleon Museum), the Philippines’ first state-of-the-art immersive maritime museum, scheduled to open its doors in 2026.

This significant sponsorship underscores MOL’s deep respect for the Philippines’ rich maritime heritage and its crucial historical role in global trade, particularly through the Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade, which the museum will extensively feature. The donation reflects MOL’s proactive efforts to support the preservation, research, and promotion of this vital maritime culture for the benefit of future generations.

“We are incredibly proud to partner with Museo del Galeón,” said Toshinobu Shinoda, MOL Executive Vice President. “This museum will be an invaluable center for learning and cultural exchange, offering visitors an immersive journey through centuries of Philippine maritime history. Our support is not just a financial contribution; it is a tangible expression of the enduring bond between MOL and the Filipino people.”

MOL’s involvement with the Philippines spans nearly a century, rooted in a mutual commitment to excellence and seafaring tradition. Today, Filipino seafarers constitute approximately 60% of MOL’s global crew, serving as the backbone of the company’s worldwide operations. This makes the Philippines a key strategic partner for the company’s sustained success.

“The sea has always connected Japan and the Philippines,” the executive continued. “By becoming a Gold Donor, we are reaffirming our long-standing commitment to the country, its people, and the future of the maritime industry. We believe that by understanding and celebrating this heritage, we can inspire the next generation of Filipino seafarers and maritime leaders.”

The Museo del Galeón is poised to become a landmark cultural institution dedicated to showcasing the fascinating history of the Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade. The museum will utilize cutting-edge technology and interactive exhibits to provide a fully immersive experience, allowing visitors to explore the ships, the cargo, and the cultures that connected Asia, the Americas, and Europe for 250 years.
