OTS administrator visits Lamitan City, commits to enhancing Bangsamoro Maritime Security

Office for Transportation Security (OTS) Administrator Undersecretary Gilberto Cruz reaffirmed the national government’s commitment to enhanced transportation and maritime security in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) during a working visit to Lamitan City on Wednesday, December 3, 2025.

Usec. Cruz paid a courtesy call on Lamitan City Mayor Roderick Furigay to discuss crucial initiatives aimed at bolstering security across port operations, particularly addressing the unique challenges of island provinces like Basilan. As a vital hub for inter-island connectivity and economic activity in the Southern Philippines, Basilan’s maritime security is a national priority.

“The archipelagic geography of the Philippines requires us to be more vigilant, and prompts us to create an adaptive security posture that would protect the traveling public,” Usec. Cruz stated. “By enhancing security in ports like Lamitan, we help safeguard the movement of people and goods, deter potential threats, and support peace and development efforts in the Bangsamoro region.”

Following the meeting, Administrator Cruz proceeded directly to the Port of Lamitan City for a comprehensive on-site assessment. The inspection included a thorough review of access control systems, passenger and cargo screening procedures, and coordination mechanisms among local security and law enforcement agencies. This visit is part of the OTS’s continuing efforts to fortify defenses across the nation’s port facilities, especially in areas with historically vulnerable coastlines and porous maritime borders.

Mayor Furigay welcomed the Administrator’s proactive engagement, expressing gratitude for the national government’s focused attention on the region’s security infrastructure.

Recommendations derived from the Lamitan City Port inspection will be integrated into the OTS’s ongoing modernization initiatives. These efforts are designed to systematically reduce vulnerabilities to terrorism, smuggling, and other forms of transnational crime, ensuring that all transportation facilities meet stringent national and international security standards.

The OTS remains dedicated to its close collaboration with local government units (LGUs), port authorities, and law enforcement partners to maintain a secure and safe transportation environment for the Filipino people.
