The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is accelerating the construction of several high-priority medical facilities under the “PBBM Legacy Hospital Projects” initiative. Tasked by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the DPWH is working to ensure the completion of state-of-the-art buildings for the nation’s premier specialty hospitals before the end of the President’s term in 2028.
The infrastructure push aims to decongest existing wards, provide patients with modern, comfortable environments, and significantly reduce recovery times through advanced facility design.
The DPWH has identified several flagship projects currently under construction, with strict deadlines to meet the increasing demand for specialized medical care:
Philippine Children’s Medical Center (PCMC): Construction of a new 8-storey building is nearing completion and is expected to open its doors to the public by June 2026.
Philippine Cancer Center (PCC): The nation’s first 20-storey specialized cancer facility is on track for completion by next year, marking a milestone in oncology care in the Philippines.
National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI) & Philippine General Hospital (PGH): Expanded facilities and additional buildings are being fast-tracked to increase bed capacity and upgrade surgical suites.
Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon emphasized that the administration is not just focused on speed, but on the structural integrity and long-term utility of these facilities.
“The President has given clear instructions: these buildings must be of the highest quality so that they can serve the Filipino people immediately upon completion,” Secretary Dizon stated. “The commitment of the President is firm—whatever funds are required to finish the PCC, PGH, and NKTI by 2028 will be integrated into the national budget.”
The acceleration of these “Legacy Projects” represents a significant shift toward centralized, world-class specialty care, ensuring that even the most complex medical procedures are accessible to all Filipinos within modern, government-funded institutions.
