The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) formally welcomed the newly constructed M/V Karkar, a Filipino-built Roll-on/Roll-off (Ro-Ro) passenger vessel, during its blessing ceremony held in Polambato, Bogo City, Cebu.
Led by Regional Director Engr. Ronaldo P. Bandalaria, the MARINA Regional Office VII (MRO-7) recognized the vessel as a tangible testament to the growing capabilities and competitiveness of the Philippine Shipbuilding and Ship Repair (SBSR) industry.
The M/V Karkar, constructed by Junida Shipyard for Sarangani Engineering Works, has a gross tonnage of 497 and can accommodate up to 317 passengers. The vessel is set for export to Papua New Guinea, marking another significant milestone for locally built Philippine vessels entering the international maritime market.
The successful construction and forthcoming export of M/V Karkar highlight the ability of Filipino shipbuilders to design and deliver seaworthy vessels that meet international maritime safety and quality standards. This achievement not only reinforces global confidence in Philippine-built ships but also contributes to job generation, skills development, and the sustained growth of the country’s SBSR sector.
In his message, Engr. Bandalaria emphasized the importance of strict compliance with maritime safety regulations, particularly for vessels operating overseas. He reaffirmed MARINA’s continued commitment to supporting shipbuilders and shipowners through policies that promote safety, quality, and innovation—aligned with the Authority’s mandate to advance a globally competitive Philippine maritime industry.
