Xpress unveils dual-track scaling strategy to electrify Philippine mobility

Xpress, a leading Philippine mobility platform, today announced a strategic expansion of its sustainable transportation fleet. By utilizing a “parallel scaling” model, the company is simultaneously deploying hybrid four-wheel taxis and fully electric two-wheel motorcycles to address the unique infrastructure and economic realities of the local market.

While the global push for full electrification continues, Xpress is prioritizing operational stability for its drivers. The company currently operates 60 hybrid taxis, with plans to increase that number to 100 by the end of February 2026, pending final licensing approvals. Looking ahead, Xpress has set an ambitious target of 500 hybrid units by the end of 2026.

The decision to lead with hybrids for the four-wheel segment is a calculated move to protect driver livelihoods while reducing carbon footprints. “Commercial taxis require guaranteed uptime,” the company stated. “Until high-speed charging infrastructure becomes sufficiently dense and reliable for fleet-level operations, hybrids allow sustainable scaling without compromising driver income stability.”

Xpress’s strategy acknowledges that electrification is not a “one-size-fits-all” solution. The company is deploying electric motorcycle taxis in dense urban corridors, citing several key advantages for the two-wheel segment:

  • Energy Efficiency: Lower energy demand compared to larger vehicles.

  • Charging Flexibility: Ability to utilize existing power grids and smaller charging footprints.

  • Rapid Deployment: Faster integration into high-traffic areas where maneuverability is key.

By recognizing that two-wheel and four-wheel electrification present distinct operational challenges, Xpress is ensuring that its fleet remains productive. Taxi fleets require rapid turnaround times and zero mid-shift downtime—requirements currently best met by hybrid technology—whereas motorcycles can thrive on more flexible charging windows.

This balanced approach allows Xpress to meet current passenger demand and support driver economics today, while systematically building the framework for a long-term transition to a fully electric four-wheel fleet as national infrastructure matures.
