New industry data for February 2026 reveals that American Airlines remains the world’s most active carrier by flight frequency. According to the latest OAG data, American is scheduled to operate 171,121 flights this month, outstripping its nearest competitor, Delta Air Lines, by more than 38,000 flights.
While U.S. carriers maintain volume leadership, the global landscape is shifting rapidly with significant capacity surges in Asia and the Middle East, alongside a notable contraction from major European and Japanese carriers.
The aviation sector is seeing a polarized growth map this month. Chinese carriers are leading the recovery and expansion charge, bolstered by a shift in holiday timing.
-
The Growth Leaders: China Southern Airlines (+11.4%) and Air China (+8.0%) are the world’s fastest-growing carriers by capacity this month.
-
The Declining Giants: Five major global players reported a year-on-year decline. Most notably, Deutsche Lufthansa saw a sharp 8.6% drop in capacity. Other carriers seeing slight contractions include IndiGo (-1.5%), Japan Airlines (-1.4%), British Airways (-0.9%), and All Nippon Airways (-0.9%).
In the realm of long-haul international travel, Emirates continues to dominate. Measured by Available Seat Kilometers (ASKs), Emirates is the largest international airline, scheduled to operate 29.7 billion ASKs this month—nearly 50% more than Qatar Airways.
Significant international expansion is also coming from:
-
Etihad Airways: +24.7% ASK growth
-
China Southern Airlines: +23.1% ASK growth
-
China Eastern Airlines: +20.3% ASK growth. “The data highlights a resilient Middle Eastern sector and a robust Chinese international rebound,” the report notes. “Lufthansa remains the outlier in the Top 20, being the only major carrier to show an ASK decline of 3.8%.”
The United States remains the world’s largest domestic market with 77.5 million scheduled seats. However, the gap is closing as China reaches 71.2 million seats.
China’s domestic market grew by 7.4% (4.9 million seats) compared to February 2025. This surge is largely attributed to the Lunar New Year falling on February 17th this year, pushing peak domestic travel demand squarely into the current month.
