DMW, OWWA ensure safe return of 57 stranded OFWs from Hong Kong amid Middle East tensions

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) confirmed the successful repatriation today of 57 Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) who were previously stranded at Hong Kong International Airport.

The group, originally bound for Abu Dhabi, was intercepted by flight disruptions and logistics hurdles stemming from the current geopolitical climate and rising tensions across the Middle East. The OFWs arrived at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) early Monday morning, where they were met by dedicated response teams from both agencies.

The resolution of this situation was the result of a multi-agency effort. While stranded in transit, the workers were under the care of the Migrant Workers Office (MWO) in Hong Kong, which provided:

  • Emergency food and water supplies.

  • On-site welfare monitoring at the airport.

  • Logistical coordination for return flights to Manila.

Upon arrival in Manila, the DMW and OWWA activated their standard emergency protocol to ensure no worker was left without support. “Our priority is the safety and well-being of our modern-day heroes,” said a DMW spokesperson. “As tensions in the Middle East fluctuate, we are maintaining a 24/7 monitoring system to assist any OFW whose travel or employment may be impacted by the regional situation.”

Beyond their safe return, OWWA has provided the following immediate services to the repatriated group:

  • Temporary Housing: Short-term accommodation for those residing in far-flung provinces.

  • Transportation Assistance: Arranged travel for the final leg of their journey back to their respective home cities.

  • Financial Counseling: Briefings on available emergency grants and livelihood programs for those whose employment was deferred.

The DMW continues to advise all OFWs and recruitment agencies to stay informed through official government channels. The Department remains in close contact with Philippine embassies and MWO branches across the Middle East and major transit hubs to provide real-time assistance as the regional situation evolves.
