DPWH nears completion of Maharlika Highway repairs ahead of Holy Week travel surge

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) announced that repair works on critical sections of the Maharlika Highway are nearing completion, just days before the anticipated surge of travelers for Holy Week.

The ongoing rehabilitation covers key segments across CALABARZON, Bicol Region, Eastern Visayas, and CARAGA—areas that typically experience significant traffic volume during the Lenten season. With millions of Filipinos expected to travel to their home provinces or pilgrimage destinations, the agency has accelerated construction timelines to ensure smoother and safer journeys.

The initiative follows a directive from President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., who instructed DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon to fast-track remaining works along the Maharlika Highway. The President emphasized the importance of eliminating narrow one-way sections caused by road repairs, which have historically led to heavy congestion during peak travel periods.

In response, DPWH has intensified its operations, deploying additional manpower and equipment to expedite completion. The agency aims to fully reopen affected lanes and minimize traffic bottlenecks before the height of Holy Week observances.

“Ensuring the convenience and safety of the traveling public is our top priority,” the DPWH said in a statement. “We are working around the clock to complete all critical repairs and restore full road capacity along the Maharlika Highway.”

Motorists are advised to continue observing traffic advisories and to plan their trips ahead of time. While most major repair works are expected to be completed, DPWH also assured the public that traffic management teams will remain on standby to assist and respond to any road-related concerns.

The Maharlika Highway, a vital north-south corridor, serves as a primary route connecting Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Its improved condition is expected to significantly ease travel and support economic activity during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
