DMW prioritizes 15,000 repatriation requests amid Middle East tensions

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) announced that it is actively managing approximately 15,000 requests for repatriation assistance from Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) across the Middle East.

DMW remains on high alert, coordinating closely with Philippine embassies and host governments to ensure the safety and welfare of Filipinos affected by regional instability.

A significant portion of these requests involves workers classified as repatriation-ready. These individuals have already completed the necessary documentation and legal requirements.

  • Immediate Focus: The DMW is fast-tracking travel arrangements for these OFWs, prioritizing those in distressed or vulnerable conditions.

  • Logistical Support: The agency is working around the clock to secure flights and transit points despite the complex geopolitical climate.

The DMW clarified that the surge in numbers is also attributed to precautionary filings. Many OFWs have submitted requests not for immediate departure, but to ensure they are included in the government’s official monitoring lists.

“This proactive step allows us to maintain a direct line with our workers,” the DMW stated. “Should the situation in their specific area worsen, having them already in our system ensures a significantly faster response time and immediate access to emergency assistance.”

Dynamic Situation and Request Withdrawals

Interestingly, a segment of the applicant pool has officially withdrawn their requests. As local conditions in certain areas stabilize or individual workplace issues are resolved, many OFWs have opted to remain in their host countries to continue their employment. This reflects the resilient nature of the Filipino workforce and the nuanced, case-by-case reality of the current situation.

The Department of Migrant Workers remains steadfast in its mission to protect every Filipino abroad. The agency continues to:

  1. Monitor regional developments in real-time.

  2. Coordinate with the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and international partners.

  3. Provide 24/7 assistance through its various command centers and social media hotlines.

The DMW advises all OFWs in affected regions to stay in constant communication with their nearest Philippine Migrant Workers Office (MWO) and to follow the safety protocols issued by host governments.
