In a swift response to the escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has officially rolled out a targeted financial assistance program to support Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) whose livelihoods have been disrupted by the US/Israel-Iran conflict.
Under the leadership of Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac, the DMW will provide a one-time financial grant of USD 200 to qualified distressed OFWs. The initiative aims to alleviate the immediate economic burden on workers facing job loss, reduced work hours, or forced unpaid leave due to the regional instability.
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Secretary Cacdac has approved a set of simplified guidelines designed to bypass traditional bureaucratic hurdles. The goal is to ensure that aid reaches the hands of Filipinos on the frontlines of the crisis as quickly as possible.
“Our priority is the welfare and peace of mind of our modern-day heroes,” said Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac. “By simplifying the application process, we are removing the barriers to support, ensuring that those affected by the shifting security situation in the Middle East receive the bridge financing they need to navigate these challenging times.”
The financial assistance is specifically earmarked for OFWs in the Middle East who meet the following criteria:
-
Employment Disruption: Workers who have been terminated or laid off due to the conflict.
-
Income Reduction: Workers experiencing a significant drop in earnings due to reduced workdays or shortened operating hours.
-
Forced Leave: Workers placed on compulsory unpaid leave by their employers as a result of the regional tensions.
To expedite the distribution, the DMW has instructed Migrant Workers Offices (MWOs) across the affected regions to facilitate the verification and payout process. Applicants will be required to submit basic documentation proving their employment status and the impact of the conflict on their income.
The DMW continues to monitor the situation in the Middle East closely, working in tandem with the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to ensure the safety and security of all Filipinos in the region.
For more information on the application guidelines and a list of participating MWOs, OFWs and their families are encouraged to visit the official DMW website or contact their nearest Philippine Embassy or Consulate.
