TMP strengthens readiness for EV battery network for green transition

Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) has strengthened the country’s capability in the dismantling and recycling of electric vehicle (EV) batteries as part of its transition to green vehicles through Filipino firm En Tsumugi ELV Dismantler Corporation.

En Tsumugi is a TMP-endorsed End-of-Life Vehicle (ELV) dismantling facility, the first of its kind in the country, located in Mexico, Pampanga.

To further boost its capability, En Tsumugi participated in Asia’s first xEV battery dismantling training, recently conducted to enhance endoflife xEV handling. Held last March 17–18, 2026 at Toyota Metal Co., Ltd., in Aichi, Japan, the program brought together participants from the Philippines and Thailand. Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) and Toyota Metal Co., Ltd. led the training to strengthen the technical knowledge and operational readiness of Toyota-recognized dismantling facilities in handling end-of-life xEVs.

The training covered the proper execution of battery dismantling procedures, including safety precautions, handling and storage protocols, and emergency response measures. Toyota also trained participants on battery collection and recycling systems, with discussions on material flow, composition breakdown, as well as opportunities, risks, and future developments in battery recycling.

The regional training initiative forms part of the ‘Toyota Global 100 Dismantlers Project,’ which aims to establish a global network of properly managed ELV facilities to enable responsible vehicle recycling, resource recovery, and reduced environmental impact across the vehicle lifecycle.

Recognized by TMC through Toyota Motor Philippines Corporation (TMP) in 2024, En Tsumugi became the first of the country’s two (2) model ELV dismantling facilities, setting benchmarks for responsible recycling of ELVs of any make and brand. It is also the fourth Toyota-endorsed dismantling facility in the ASEAN region, contributing to the growing regional network of model dismantlers. Alongside En Tsumugi is Standard Insurance Co., Inc. in Naic, Cavite, which primarily handles ELVs within its insured portfolio.

As the transition toward electrified mobility becomes more prevalent, TMP emphasized that readiness goes beyond accessibility of xEVs in the market and extends to the enabling ecosystem required to support its sustained adoption and longterm viability.

“This proactive step reflects our ‘Beyond Zero’ commitment to ensure that as we advance electrified mobility in the country through Toyota and Lexus xEVs, we are equally prepared across the entire vehicle lifecycle,” said Masando Hashimoto, president of TMP.

“Building this capability reflects our commitment in preparing for the future of mobility for everyone. This ensures that as the industry evolves, the supporting ecosystem grows in a way that is sustainable, inclusive, and future-ready.”

Globally, Toyota affiliates are aligned toward achieving carbon neutrality and net positive impact under the Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050 (TEC 2050). One of its six challenges, Challenge No. 5, aims to “establish a recycling based society and systems,” which covers the Toyota Global 100 Dismantlers Project. TMP and its partners have aligned their Life Cycle Action (LCA) by integrating xEV battery recycling into the broader circular economy and greenhouse gas reduction efforts.

Following the awarding of certificate, En Tsumugi met the CAMPI President, Jose Maria “Jing” Atienza, to introduce its efforts in advancing proper end-of-life vehicle dismantling, highlighting how such capabilities can support the development of industry standards and strengthen the country’s overall readiness for electrified mobility.

The continued expansion of xEV adoption in the country is evidenced by its 11.2 percent market share and 36.2 percent year-on-year growth based on the data from the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines (CAMPI). Industry sales of xEVs reached 11,800 units in the first quarter of 2026. TMP recorded a combined Toyota and Lexus xEV sales of 5,252 units, up 33.4 percent from the same period last year and representing 10.6 percent of its year-to-date sales.
