Paraguayan President Santiago Peña Palacios arrives in Manila for historic state visit to bolster bilateral ties

President Santiago Peña Palacios of the Republic of Paraguay arrived in Manila on Sunday, commencing a historic two-day State Visit aimed at dynamically strengthening bilateral relations between Paraguay and the Philippines.

The Paraguayan leader and his official delegation touched down at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1 in Pasay City at approximately 3:50 p.m. Upon arrival, the delegation was warmly received by a welcoming party led by H.E. Miguel Ángel Ubaldino Romero Álvarez, Non-Resident Ambassador of Paraguay to the Philippines.

The state visit features a tightly structured itinerary designed to honor Philippine history and foster high-level diplomatic collaboration:

  • Wreath-Laying Ceremony (Monday Morning): President Peña Palacios will pay tribute to the Philippines’ national hero by leading a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the Dr. José Rizal Monument in Luneta Park, Manila.

  • Bilateral Summit at Malacañang Palace (Monday Afternoon): Following the ceremony, President Peña Palacios will proceed to Malacañang Palace for a pivotal bilateral meeting with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

During their meeting, the two heads of state are expected to explore mutually beneficial opportunities for cooperation, with a strong focus on trade expansion, agricultural technology, investment opportunities, and enhancing people-to-people exchanges between the two nations.

President Peña Palacios, who assumed office in August 2023 as one of Paraguay’s youngest modern leaders, brings a wealth of economic expertise to the bilateral discussions. An economist by profession and the country’s former Minister of Finance, his administration has been defined by a commitment to economic modernization, attracting foreign direct investment, and building robust international partnerships.

President Peña Palacios and his delegation are scheduled to depart Manila on Monday evening concluding the high-level visit.
