Japanese health-tech firm eyes PH as ASEAN manufacturing base

Japanese firm Tanita Corporation, known for its precision health and wellness devices, is considering the Philippines as a possible site for an integrated facility covering parts processing, assembly, and inspection.
Trade and industry Secretary Cristina A. Roque said the project could generate around PHP2 billion in export sales and create approximately 500 jobs within five years of commercial operations.
The said investment was discussed during the official visit of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to Japan, where members of the Philippine economic team, led by DTI Secretary Roque, together with Department of Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr., met with Tanita President and CEO Senri Tanida, senior company officials, and representatives from partner firms.
During the meeting, Tanita shared that it is evaluating ASEAN locations for its proposed “Factory No. 3,” following its existing plants in Japan and China. The facility will serve as an export-oriented manufacturing base supplying products to Japan, Europe, the Americas, and other Asian markets.
For her part, Secretary Roque emphasized Tanita’s interest in the Philippines reflects the strong alignment with the Marcos Jr. administration’s push to attract higher-value manufacturing and technology-driven industries.
“Tanita represents the type of forward-looking and innovation-driven investor that the Philippines is actively seeking to attract. Their investment will support our broader goal of positioning the Philippines as a competitive regional hub for high-value manufacturing, wellness technologies, and preventive healthcare-related industries,” Secretary Roque said.
The discussions also highlighted the Philippines’ growing strengths in precision manufacturing and electronics assembly, backed by a young and highly trainable workforce, improving infrastructure, and investment reforms under the CREATE MORE Act. Philippine officials further reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting strategic investors through investment facilitation and workforce development in coordination with agencies such as the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA).
The meeting concluded with both sides expressing interest in continuing discussions as Tanita evaluates potential ASEAN manufacturing locations and explores long-term partnership opportunities with the Philippines.
