AirAsia Group denies grounding rumors, condemns deliberate smear campaign

AirAsia X (AirAsia Group) has issued a categorical denial regarding recent media reports claiming that the operations of its subsidiary airline, Philippines AirAsia (flight code: Z2), are being grounded.

The Group stated unequivocally that these reports are entirely false, malicious, and do not reflect the actual reality of the airline’s robust business and day-to-day operations.

All Philippines AirAsia (Z2) flights remain fully operational, with scheduled flights and services continuing uninterrupted across its entire network, subject only to standard operational variables such as weather.

AirAsia Group views these coordinated, sensationalized reports as part of a long-standing, deliberate smear campaign designed to undermine fair competition within the Philippine aviation sector.

The Group warns that such narratives are engineered to benefit dominant market players seeking to limit consumer choice and engineer a market monopoly. AirAsia emphasizes that a monopoly ultimately harms the public, typically resulting in:

  • Reduced competition across domestic and international routes.

  • Fewer travel choices for passengers.

  • Significantly higher airfares for the traveling public.

Tony Fernandes, Co-founder and Advisor of AirAsia Group, reaffirmed the company’s unyielding commitment to the region:

“AirAsia has long championed affordable travel and will continue to stand firmly against any development that harms consumers or restricts access to air connectivity. AirAsia carries almost seven million guests in the Philippines annually, and our commitment to the country is absolute. We are deeply invested in the Philippines, its people, and its future.

For over a decade, we have played a key role in democratising air travel, making flying affordable, fun, and accessible to millions of Filipinos who may not otherwise have had the opportunity to travel by air. We have removed unwanted charges and made travel more flexible through custom ancillary options.”

Looking to the future, AirAsia is heavily investing in the development of new airport infrastructure across the Philippines, with a core focus on Ninoy Aquino International Airport (MNL) and Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB). These initiatives are expected to unlock growth, boost operational efficiency, and drive down costs further.

Furthermore, as the Group expands its aircraft order book to pioneer the world’s first global narrowbody low-cost network carrier, it plans to aggressively deploy more aircraft into the Philippines. This fleet expansion will allow Philippines AirAsia to scale its network, offer even more competitive fares, and deliver superior value to Filipino travelers.

Philippines AirAsia remains fiercely committed to serving the public, boosting tourism, driving economic growth, and ensuring safe, affordable, and reliable air travel remains accessible to every Filipino.
