Nickel Asia Corporation (NAC), the Philippines’ largest producer of lateritic nickel ore and a growing player in renewable energy, has become the first mining company in the country to receive validation from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction targets.
The validation confirms that NAC’s GHG emissions reduction targets are aligned with climate science, with goals to reduce absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 42 percent by 2030 and Scope 3 emissions by 37.5 percent by 2035, from a 2024 base year.

The SBTi is a corporate climate action organization that enables companies worldwide to set emissions reduction targets in line with the latest climate science and the goals of the Paris Agreement.
“This is a significant achievement for all of us at NAC, as we join thousands of global companies that received SBTi validation for climate commitments aligned with the United Nations’ Paris Agreement in combatting Climate Change,” explained Jose Bayani Baylon, NAC SVP for Sustainability, Risk, External Affairs, and Communications, and Chief Sustainability Officer.
SBTi’s independent assessment recognizes NAC’s commitment to setting meaningful and measurable emissions reduction targets that support climate action across the organization.
As a collaboration of Mine Operations, Mining Center of Excellence and Technical Operations, Mining Compliance, Procurement Center, Corporate Finance, and the Sustainability Center, these targets are supported by NAC’s ongoing development of its second-cycle Sustainability Roadmap, which outlines actions to reduce emissions across its operations using data provided by process leads from all business units.
NAC aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, with interim targets for 2030 as defined in its Sustainability Roadmap. These commitments include engaging value chain partners in advancing climate action and supporting the transition to a low-carbon future.
According to NAC Assistant Vice President for Sustainability Edwin P. Nerva, “We’ve worked long and hard to arrive at this milestone.”
“Each one of us at NAC plays an important role in this collective effort—embedding sustainability in our operations, engaging our communities, collaborating with suppliers and markets, and creating long-term value for all our stakeholders. And this is just the beginning,” Nerva emphasized.
