Drewry World Container Index rebounds 1% to $4,297 per 40ft container

The Drewry World Container Index (WCI), a leading global benchmark for freight rates, rebounded by 1% to $4,297 per 40ft container this week, snapping a three-week streak of declines. The uptick was primarily driven by rate gains across Transpacific trade lanes, supported by firm cargo volumes, successful General Rate Increases (GRIs), and ongoing port congestion in Asia.

Transpacific spot freight rates posted solid gains across both US coasts into August:

  • Shanghai to New York: Rose 4% to $7,893 per 40ft container.

  • Shanghai to Los Angeles: Increased 3% to $5,894 per 40ft container.

Carrier-implemented GRIs held firm as demand remained steady. Additionally, persistent port congestion across Central and South China continued to restrict effective market capacity, bolstering freight rates. According to Drewry’s Container Capacity Insight, eight blank sailings are scheduled for next week—matching this week’s figure—indicating stable available capacity and expected reduced rate volatility in the coming days.

The Asia–Europe trade lane demonstrated overall price stability this week:

  • Shanghai to Rotterdam: Held flat at $4,653 per 40ft container.

  • Shanghai to Genoa: Edged down slightly by 2% to $5,506 per 40ft container.

Capacity control remains active on the lane, with three blank sailings recorded this week and three additional blank sailings scheduled for next week. Drewry expects Asia–Europe spot rates to remain stable over the near term as carriers continue to balance available capacity with demand.

The broader East–West container freight market continues to navigate elevated volatility driven by geopolitical tensions, new US tariff policies, and Asian port bottlenecks. Renewed friction in the Middle East has heightened risks surrounding critical shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz, leading several major carriers to introduce Emergency Fuel Surcharges (EFS) effective August.

Drewry anticipates that ongoing geopolitical developments, shifting global trade policies, and port congestion will remain key determinants of container freight market trends and rate volatility in the weeks ahead.
