President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. arrived in Vancouver on Wednesday afternoon (Canada time) for a historic official visit aimed at diversifying the Philippines’ international partnerships and deepening economic, defense, and maritime ties with Canada.
The plane carrying the President and the Philippine delegation touched down at Vancouver International Airport at 4:46 p.m. (7:46 a.m., Thursday, Philippine Time). The chief executive was warmly received by Philippine Ambassador to Canada Jose Victor Chan-Gonzaga, Consul General Gina Jamoralin, and Defense Attaché to Washington BGen Ray Anthony Derillo.
This milestone visit marks the first time a Philippine president has made an official visit to Canada in over a decade, arriving shortly after the two nations celebrated the 75th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2024.
President Marcos underscored the vital importance of the mission, highlighting the need to reinforce ties with a longstanding friend and partner as both Pacific nations navigate shared regional and global challenges. Prior to his departure, the President noted that the visit builds on a “very positive trajectory” and will actively pursue new collaborations in niche sectors, specifically mining, critical minerals, and renewable energy.
Key highlights of the official visit:
-
High-Level Bilateral Talks: President Marcos will hold a one-on-one meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. The leaders are set to outline a comprehensive Plan of Action designed to shape the next phase of bilateral relations and drive sustained mutual growth.
-
Economic and Investment Expansion: The President will engage directly with Canadian business leaders to boost two-way trade. The administration is focused on attracting major investments into key Philippine sectors, including mining, information technology-business process management (IT-BPM), nuclear energy, telecommunications, cyber technology, and financial services.

Strategic Cooperation: High on the bilateral agenda are enhanced trade agreements, defense and maritime cooperation, and the improvement of direct air links between the two countries.
-

Canada is home to approximately one million Filipinos, who are widely respected across the country for their skills, professionalism, and dedication.
