The Royal Norwegian Embassy in Manila recently hosted key leaders from the Philippine maritime sector, marking a milestone meeting that celebrated decades of strong bilateral cooperation and charted a path toward a greener, more sustainable shipping industry.
His Excellency Christian Halaas Lyster, Ambassador of Norway to the Philippines, welcomed long-standing partners from the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA), led by Administrator Sonia B. Malaluan. The engagement highlighted the enduring tie between the two maritime nations—a partnership that continues to expand employment opportunities for Filipino seafarers, elevate maritime education and training standards, and drive international compliance in global shipping.
The meeting followed a significant gesture from the private sector, as the Association of Licensed Manning Agencies (ALMA Maritime Group) recently passed a formal board resolution expressing deep appreciation for Norway’s steadfast leadership. The resolution commended Norway as a responsible maritime partner dedicated to ethical manning, seafarer welfare, due process, and sustained confidence in the world-class expertise of Filipino maritime professionals.
“The trust placed in Filipino seafarers by Norwegian shipowners has been a cornerstone of our bilateral relations,” noted representatives during the exchanges, emphasizing that ethical recruitment and continuous training remain top priorities for both countries.
As Ambassador Lyster concludes his diplomatic posting in the Philippines this month, both sides reflected on major achievements during his tenure while committing to future collaboration.
Looking ahead, Norway and the Philippines reaffirmed their commitment to advancing maritime standards with a focus on decarbonization, safety, and digital transformation in global seafaring.
