In a major step toward strengthening bilateral relations through public health innovation, Team Sweden and the Veterans Memorial Medical Center (VMMC) announced a strategic collaboration to advance cancer care and accelerate digital transformation in Philippine healthcare delivery.
The announcement took place during an official visit to Manila by Swedish Minister of Defence Pål Jonson, alongside Undersecretary for Civil, Veterans & Reserve Affairs Pablo M. Lorenzo, and VMMC Director Dr. Peter Paul Reuben G. Galvez. Endorsed by Secretary of National Defense Gilberto C. Teodoro, Jr., the initiative forms a key pillar of the broader Sweden–Philippines Strategic Partnership in Cancer Care.
The collaboration brings together Swedish medical innovation and Philippine healthcare leadership to establish scalable solutions for public hospitals, beginning with those who served the nation.
“Security is ultimately about people. Societies are stronger when they can care for their citizens, support those who have served their country, and leverage innovation to meet future challenges,” Pål Jonson, Minister of Defence, Sweden.
“Through this partnership, we are bringing innovative approaches to early cancer detection and hospital digitalisation to Veterans Memorial Medical Center, helping to improve health outcomes and strengthen care for veterans,” said H.E. Anna Ferry, Ambassador of Sweden to the Philippines.
Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the Philippines, largely due to late-stage diagnoses when treatment options are limited. The partnership addresses this challenge by exploring AI-assisted imaging analysis.
By leveraging artificial intelligence on routine scans already performed in patient care, clinicians can detect early indicators of lung cancer without requiring extra equipment, added radiation, or disruptions to existing hospital workflows.

Drawing on Sweden’s experience in digital health ecosystems, the initiative will support VMMC’s roadmap to become a leading digitally enabled public hospital. Key goals include:
