Global airline capacity climbs 2.6% in August 2026, driven by strong growth in North East Asia and Western Europe

Global airline capacity has expanded by 14.2 million seats this August compared to the same period in 2025, marking a 2.6% year-on-year increase, according to the latest market data from OAG.

While the global outlook remains positive, industry recovery continues to reflect distinct regional disparities, with significant surges in Asia and Europe, contrasted with ongoing geopolitical headwinds in the Middle East.

The vast majority of this month’s global growth is concentrated in two major markets:

  • North East Asia: Added 5.1 million seats, leading absolute growth worldwide.

  • Western Europe: Up by 4.7 million seats compared to last year.

  • Central/Western Africa: Recorded the largest growth rate globally, jumping 15.2% year-on-year.

Conversely, regional contractions continue to impact overall totals:

  • Middle East: Capacity remains constrained, down 1.47 million seats (-5.7%) year-on-year due to ongoing regional instability.

  • Other Declines: Southwest Pacific (-257,000 seats), South Asia (-233,000 seats), and the Caribbean (-204,000 seats) also experienced lower capacity levels than August 2025.

Major carriers around the globe are demonstrating varied growth trajectories as airlines adapt to regional demand and strategic integrations:

  • Alaska Airlines continues aggressive frequency growth, reporting 19.4% more flights year-on-year, primarily driven by the successful recent integration of Hawaiian Airlines.

  • JetBlue also outperformed North American peers, increasing flights by 9.8%, while remaining major North American carriers in the Top 20 saw modest gains between 1% and 4%.

  • European Low-Cost Leadership: Ryanair continues its steady upward trajectory, up 6% this month compared to last August, alongside easyJet and Turkish Airlines, which both posted 2.4% growth.

  • Capacity Reductions: Three carriers in the Top 20 cut capacity by more than 2%: IndiGo (-2.9%), All Nippon Airways (-5.7%), and Deutsche Lufthansa AG (-10.8%).

International Available Seat Kilometer (ASK) metrics highlight shifting long-haul dynamics:

  • Etihad Airways bucked regional trends in the Middle East, recording the fastest growth of any carrier in the Top 20 with international ASKs up 12.8% this month.

  • Emirates and Qatar Airways continue to record lower-than-average ASKs impacted by regional dynamics, down 5.4% and 5.9% year-on-year, respectively.

  • Other major carriers registering declines in international ASKs include United Airlines (-4.1%), American Airlines (-0.8%), and Air France (-0.3%).
