Satellite campuses of Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU) in Batangas and Laguna will aggregate their respective electricity consumption and get direct supply of renewable energy in partnership with First Gen Corporation (First Gen). The initiative will help LPU rationalize power costs and reduce the energy intensity at its key South Luzon campuses.
Under the agreement signed last February 5, 2026 by LPU and First Gen officials, the former would pool over 1,150 kilowatts (kW) of electricity usage of the LPU Laguna and Batangas campuses and transition to using geothermal energy sourced by First Gen from its unified generating plants in Tongonan, Ormoc City, and Kananga, Leyte (Unified Leyte).
LPU Batangas and Laguna have already shifted to geothermal power, while the pooling of the electricity consumption of these campuses—enabled by government’s Retail Aggregation Program (RAP), will take effect on February 16, 2026.
Under RAP, power consumers with at least 500 kW of pooled energy demand within a contiguous area or the same owners, or under the same business category can directly choose and negotiate with an electricity supplier. By June 26, 2026, the RAP threshold will come down from 500 kW to 100 kW per month, enabling more consumers to participate.
“Over the years we have learned a lot from the Lopez group and this partnership will not just help us make our campuses greener but also help us attain cost-efficiency on power. We are optimistic that our partnership with First Gen will open more opportunities for us to utilize more renewable energy and become more energy efficient,” said Dr Peter Laurel, President of the Lyceum of the Philippines University.
The LPU system has a total of five campuses in Metro Manila and Southern Luzon, with each campus championing various initiatives to help improve its environmental sustainability. LPU has also committed to advance renewable energy solutions and reduce campus carbon emissions.
“As retail competition and open access were implemented and thresholds went down, we are proud to partner with LPU whose values and commitment to environmental sustainability align closely with ours. We look forward to being their progress partner as Lyceum moves forward with their vision to have green campuses,” said Carlo Vega, First Gen’s Chief Customer Engagement Officer.
First Gen, a subsidiary of Lopez-owned First Philippine Holdings Corporation—one of the oldest and most diversified Philippines conglomerates, operates 1,700 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy from geothermal, hydro, wind, and solar sources.
To bolter national energy security and complement intermittent RE sources, First Gen also holds a 40% stake in four gas-fired power plants with a combined capacity of 2,017 MW, majority-owned by Prime Infrastructure Capital, Inc.
