The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has officially directed the Land Transportation Office (LTO) to implement a nationwide three-month moratorium on penalties for the renewal of expiring driver’s licenses and motor vehicle registrations.
This measure aims to provide immediate financial relief to motorists and transport workers amid rising economic costs.
Speaking at the Saturday News Forum on Congress TV Digital, DOTr Acting Secretary Giovani Lopez confirmed that the reprieve covers all licenses and registrations set to expire within the current month. The moratorium includes student permits, conductor permits, and all classifications of motor vehicle registrations.
“We gave an instruction to the LTO to basically give a moratorium,” Secretary Lopez stated. “For the next three months, motorists can register or get their licenses without any penalties.”
The directive follows a broader mandate from President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to implement comprehensive transport relief measures across the country. This initiative is part of a larger government strategy to cushion the impact of inflation on the transport sector. In addition to the licensing reprieve, the DOTr is overseeing a rollout of auxiliary support programs, including:
- Cash Assistance: Targeted financial aid for public utility drivers and operators.
- Fuel Subsidies: Support to mitigate the impact of fluctuating global oil prices.
- Fare Discounts: Measures designed to ease the daily expenses of the commuting public.
The LTO is expected to release the specific implementing guidelines shortly to ensure a smooth transition at all regional offices and satellite centers. Motorists whose documents expire this month are encouraged to take advantage of this window to settle their renewals without the burden of late fees or surcharges.
The DOTr remains committed to streamlining administrative processes and providing responsive governance to ensure the mobility and economic stability of the Filipino people.
