Philippines champions regional AI leadership at the 2026 National Innovation Day

The 2026 National Innovation Day successfully concluded on Wednesday, marking a pivotal moment for regional technological cooperation. Under the theme “AGOS ASEAN: AI for Growth, Opportunity, and Sustainability in ASEAN,” the event gathered policy leaders, industry giants, and academic experts to chart a future driven by responsible artificial intelligence and cross-border collaboration.

As the Philippines assumes its role as ASEAN Chair, the event served as a strategic platform to harmonize regional innovation. DEPDev Secretary and National Innovation Council (NIC) Vice-Chair Arsenio M. Balisacan emphasized that the “flow” (Agos) of innovation must transcend national borders to build a resilient and competitive economic bloc.

“As we move forward together, we remain united by a common purpose: to navigate uncertainty, deepen collaboration, and build a stronger, more innovative ASEAN,” Balisacan stated.

Secretary Balisacan also delivered a message from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who lauded the annual celebration as a cornerstone for fostering breakthroughs. The President’s message highlighted the necessity of a “whole-of-society” approach—uniting government, industry, and academia—to ensure the region remains agile and future-ready.

The second day of the summit delved into the ethical complexities of the digital age. Key discussions centered on:

  • Frameworks for Responsible AI: Establishing safety standards for emerging technologies.

  • AI Ethics and Governance: Ensuring transparency and equity in algorithmic decision-making.

  • ASEAN Points of Action: DEPDev Undersecretary Rosemarie G. Edillon presented a synthesized roadmap for regional implementation.

The event featured a keynote address from Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Sonny Angara, alongside high-level endorsements from international partners, including H.E. Constance See (Ambassador of Singapore), Jung Young Sun (KOICA Country Director), and Vanessa Jopillo (Co-founder of Ediphi Training Programs Inc.).

A highlight of the closing ceremonies was the announcement of the Presidential Filipinnovation Awards (NCR Sub-National Competition) winners, recognizing homegrown enterprises that embody the spirit of “Filipinnovation.”
