In a major push to revitalize bilateral economic relations, the Philippine Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the Board of Investments (BOI) successfully held a recent high-level roundtable meeting with the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce (ICOC).
The strategic meeting was co-chaired by Dr. Ceferino S. Rodolfo, DTI Undersecretary and BOI Managing Head, and Mr. Mehmet Develioğlu, Vice President of the ICOC. The dialogue brought together executive board members, sectoral cluster leaders, and prominent Turkish business representatives eager to explore expansive trade and investment opportunities in the Philippines.
While current bilateral trade between the two nations remains strong in sectors like defense equipment, pharmaceuticals, and agri-food, Undersecretary Rodolfo emphasized the vast potential to diversify into higher-value, future-oriented industries.
Crucially, the Philippines has identified Türkiye as a highly reliable partner to supply critical inputs for its domestic manufacturing industries. The Turkish delegation at the roundtable represented diverse and high-tech sectors, including electrical equipment, machine tools, and automatization.
“This engagement moves us beyond episodic interactions and toward sustained, long-term economic cooperation,” said Undersecretary Rodolfo. “The Philippines is ready to work hand-in-hand with the ICOC to create permanent commercial partnerships and investment success stories.”
The timing of the meeting is particularly significant as it aligns with the Philippines’ upcoming ASEAN Chairship. Undersecretary Rodolfo highlighted that the Philippines serves as an ideal gateway for Turkish businesses looking to seamlessly tap into the broader, rapidly growing ASEAN market.
Philippine Consul General Christina Rola-McKernan underscored the importance of this institutional relationship, stating that a structured alliance with the ICOC provides the necessary momentum to fully restore and strengthen post-pandemic trade and investment connectivity.
To turn these discussions into tangible business outcomes, the ICOC has officially offered to:
-
Support direct business-to-business (B2B) matchmaking.
-
Facilitate strategic company-to-company linkages.
-
Host upcoming Philippine trade delegations in Türkiye.
Welcoming these proposals, Undersecretary Rodolfo inquired about a reciprocal ICOC business mission to the Philippines. He guaranteed full institutional backing from the DTI and BOI, promising structured B2B engagements and sector-specific investment dialogues upon their arrival.
Follow-through, sector-specific meetings are already being organized to prioritize key industries of mutual interest. Philippine diplomatic and trade representatives—including Consul Oronce and Commercial Counselor Banzon—are fully deployed to assist Turkish companies virtually or on-site to fast-track these initiatives.
