Global railway pioneer Prof. Hitoshi Tsunashima named key panelist at ASEAN Railway Conference 2026

The ASEAN Railway Conference announced that Prof. Hitoshi Tsunashima, a globally recognized leader in railway engineering, vehicle dynamics, and human factors, will be a featured speaker at this year’s highly anticipated event, taking place from June 18–19, 2026.

Prof. Tsunashima, who serves as the Deputy Director of the Nihon University Center for Railway Research, will bring decades of pioneering expertise to Panel Discussion 2: Innovation and Technology to Drive Modern Railway Transformation. His session will focus on how advanced sensing, real-time simulation, and human-centered design can revolutionize the future of railway infrastructure and operations across the ASEAN region.

Prof. Tsunashima’s groundbreaking research stands at the intersection of machine intelligence and human performance. His work is reshaping modern transit safety through innovations such as:

  • Data-Driven Diagnostics: Utilizing onboard sensing and advanced track condition monitoring to identify maintenance needs before failures occur.

  • Human-Centered Safety: Integrating wearable brain activity measurement devices for train drivers alongside next-generation train simulators to study and optimize operator focus and reduce human error.

By blending these disciplines, his research equips transit networks to be smarter, safer, and significantly more resilient against operational disruptions.

With a distinguished career spanning both heavy industry and academia—including pivotal early work at Kobe Steel, Ltd., followed by decades of academic innovation at Nihon University—Prof. Tsunashima has become one of Japan’s foremost voices in railway transformation.

In his role at the Nihon University Center for Railway Research, he actively bridges the gap between theory and execution. He regularly spearheads massive collaborative efforts alongside private corporations, global research institutes, and public agencies to turn laboratory breakthroughs into real-world railway solutions deployed on active tracks.

The ASEAN Railway Conference 2026 remains the premier gathering for regional transit authorities, operators, and technology providers. Attendees looking to glean insights into the next generation of rail technology are encouraged to attend Panel Discussion 2 to catch Prof. Tsunashima’s insights firsthand.
