The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) has announced the temporary suspension of all operations at the Port of General Santos, effective immediately, following the earthquake that struck the region on June 8, 2026.
The suspension has been instituted to prioritize public safety while comprehensive technical assessments and structural inspections are conducted across all port facilities.
Key details of the suspension:
-
Scope of Suspension: All vessel movements, cargo handling operations, and ancillary port activities are completely halted.
-
Duration: Operations will remain suspended until full technical evaluations are completed and an official notice is issued confirming the safety and integrity of the port infrastructure.
To minimize disruption to the supply chain and regional commerce, the PPA has designated the Port of Malalag in Davao del Sur as the primary alternative hub.
The Port of Malalag is fully equipped to handle a variety of cargo types, including:
-
Bulk cargo
-
Break-bulk cargo
-
Conventional cargo
-
Containerized cargo
-
Acceptance of specific cargo types at the Port of Malalag will be subject to the immediate availability of specialized cargo handling equipment. Shippers and operators are advised to coordinate in advance.
The PPA is working swiftly to assess the damage and ensure that the Port of General Santos can safely resume operations as soon as possible.
The public, shipping lines, and port stakeholders are strongly advised to monitor official PPA communication channels for real-time updates and notices regarding the reopening of the facility.
