DTI Sec. Roque convenes National Price Coordinating Council to safeguard consumers and tackle economic challenges

Keeping essential goods affordable for every Filipino requires decisive, unified action. To address this head-on, Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Cris A. Roque, serving as Chair of the National Price Coordinating Council (NPCC), officially convened the Council’s 2nd Quarter Meeting to roll out aggressive measures aimed at protecting consumers, stabilizing the prices of Basic Necessities and Prime Commodities (BNPCs), and insulating the local economy from both global fluctuations and climate-related disruptions.

With macroeconomic pressures and unpredictable weather patterns threatening supply chains, Secretary Roque emphasized that a reactive approach is no longer enough. The council met to fortify the country’s economic defenses through closer inter-agency market monitoring, proactive supply management, and strict enforcement of fair trade laws.

“Our priority is clear: we must shield Filipino families from unfair price spikes and artificial shortages,” Secretary Roque stated. “Stability in the market is not just an economic goal; it is a matter of public welfare. By driving strong coordination across member agencies, we are ensuring that essential goods remain accessible and affordable, even as we face persistent economic and climate headwinds.”

During the session, the NPCC mapped out strategic interventions to counter potential supply bottlenecks, particularly those triggered by agricultural disruptions and climate events. Key initiatives discussed include:

  • Strengthened Inter-Agency Monitoring: Enhancing data-sharing between the DTI, the Department of Agriculture (DA), and local government units to track inventory levels and spot price anomalies in real-time.

  • Climate Resilience in Supply Chains: Developing contingency logistics routes and buffer-stocking mechanisms to ensure the steady flow of goods during severe weather seasons.

  • Rigorous Consumer Protection: Ramping up nationwide market inspections to deter hoarding, profiteering, and the operation of illegal cartels.

The NPCC reiterates its commitment to maintaining a transparent, fair, and resilient marketplace. Moving forward into the second half of the year, the Council will continue to work alongside private sector stakeholders and manufacturers to balance industry viability with consumer affordability.
