President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Kazan on the sidelines of the ASEAN-Russia Commemorative Summit, marking a historic milestone of 50 years of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and the Russian Federation.
During the bilateral meeting, both leaders affirmed their commitment to strengthening ties, with a strong focus on expanding economic cooperation, energy security, and regional stability.
President Putin highlighted the longstanding tradition of mutual respect between the two nations, pointing to significant untapped potential for deeper collaboration. He specifically identified trade, agriculture, and energy as key sectors for mutual growth and underscored the vital role of the Joint Russia-Philippine Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation in driving these initiatives forward.
For his part, President Marcos emphasized the value of regular political consultations to sustain diplomatic momentum.
“There is a great deal more that we can do,” President Marcos stated, identifying energy and food security as urgent shared priorities for both nations.
Speaking in his capacity as the ASEAN Chair, President Marcos also extended a formal invitation to President Putin to attend the 21st East Asia Summit in Manila. He emphasized the critical role of the forum in promoting a stable, secure, and prosperous Asia-Pacific region.
The meeting underscores a mutual desire to revitalize bilateral engagement as the two countries celebrate a half-century of formal diplomatic ties.
