Drewry World Container Index drops 3% to $4,255

Global container freight rates continued their downward trend this week as softening demand and reduced front-loading activity exerted pressure across major East–West trade lanes. The Drewry World Container Index (WCI)—a leading global benchmark for freight procurement—decreased 3% to $4,255 per 40-foot container (FEU).

The decline was driven primarily by lower spot rates on key Transpacific and Asia–Europe shipping corridors.

  • Transpacific Route: Spot freight rates from Shanghai to Los Angeles dropped 2% to $5,739 per 40ft container, while rates from Shanghai to New York held steady at $7,578 per 40ft container.

  • Asia–Europe Route: Spot rates from Shanghai to Genoa fell 6% to $5,630 per 40ft container, while Shanghai to Rotterdam declined 3% to $4,677 per 40ft container.

In response to easing demand following the recent implementation of new U.S. tariff measures, ocean carriers are actively utilizing blank sailings and service adjustments to stabilize the market and prevent further rate erosion.

According to the latest Drewry Container Capacity Insight:

  • Transpacific: Eight blank sailings are scheduled for next week, up from seven this week. With increased available capacity entering the market, Drewry expects rate volatility on Transpacific lanes to diminish in the coming week.

  • Asia–Europe: Three blank sailings are scheduled for next week, down slightly from four this week. Proactive capacity management by carriers is expected to keep Asia–Europe rates stable over the next week.

Beyond seasonal demand shifts, geopolitical tension in the Middle East has prompted several carriers to announce Emergency Fuel Surcharges (EFS) starting in August. Global procurement teams and supply chain operators should expect market conditions and freight rate trends to remain influenced by ongoing developments, including global trade policy changes, geopolitical risks, and intermittent port congestion.
