New Tictabon port to fuel progress and connectivity in Zamboanga

Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Vince Dizon said the newly completed port in Tictabon is expected provide the island enhanced connectivity to Zamboanga.

Together with Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) General Manager Jay Santiago and local government officials, Dizon led the turnover ceremony of the newly completed Tictabon Community Port in Barangay Tigtabon, Tigtabon Island, Zamboanga City.

The project, valued at over P29.31 million, was funded by the DOTr and implemented by the PPA through a competitive procurement and bidding process. It involves the construction of a reinforced concrete (RC) pier, reclamation, and backup areas, and a waiting shed, all aimed at improving transportation services on the island.

In his speech, Secretary Dizon emphasized the importance of the project for the local community, stating, “This is for you and your children because your livelihood, which comes from the sea, must be supported by the national government.”

Barangay Tigtabon is located approximately 20 to 30 minutes by motorboat from the mainland of Zamboanga. According to the Philippine Statistics Authority, the barangay’s population in 2020 was 5,365. The residents primarily rely on fishing, agriculture, and seaweed farming for their livelihood.

PPA General Manager Santiago highlighted the significance of the new port in enhancing both transportation and the local economy. He acknowledged the community’s appreciation, noting that the port’s development has improved the ease of transport for goods, residents, and even teachers and students.

Before the port’s construction, residents faced significant challenges in transporting goods and traveling to and from the island. The new, well-maintained facility has significantly improved their access to essential services, made it easier for students to attend school, and enabled smoother transport of harvested seaweed to the mainland for trade.

With the Tigtabon Community Port now in operation, the island’s economy is poised for continued growth, as transportation logistics have become more efficient, benefiting both residents and local businesses.
