Global air capacity dips in June amid regional shifts

Global air capacity has contracted slightly this month, down 2.1 million seats (0.4%) from June of last year, according to the latest data from OAG.

The marginal decline highlights a highly polarized aviation landscape, where robust summer surges across Europe and Central Asia are largely countering significant contractions in the Middle East and North America.

Key regional highlights:
  • The Middle East & South Asia Face Headwinds: Middle East capacity remains 17.6% below last June (a loss of 4.1 million seats), though this marks a recovery from last month’s 24.3% deficit. Geopolitical tensions continue to impact India’s largest international market to the UAE, where capacity plunged 14.9% (340,000 fewer seats), dragging overall South Asian capacity down by 3.8%.

  • Europe and Africa Power Growth: European growth is nearly offsetting global losses, adding 3.8 million seats compared to last year. Leisure travel is booming, with Spain-UK capacity up 8.2% (nearly 500,000 seats), Italy-Spain up 11.9%, and Italy-UK up 10.9%. Additionally, Central/Western Africa and Central Asia posted strong year-on-year growth of 15% and 9.3%, respectively.

  • North American Fractures: North American capacity fell 1.2%, heavily impacted by the collapse of Spirit Airlines.

Domestic performance among the world’s largest markets remains mixed. The USA, India, Japan, and Australia all contracted by 1% to 3%, while China remained flat (+0.5%). Conversely, Canada (+2.5%) and Turkiye (+2.2%) showed positive momentum.
