The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has successfully facilitated the safe repatriation of six Filipino seafarers following a high-risk maritime incident in the northern Black Sea last month.
The seafarers were crew members aboard the MT Blue, which sustained severe damage during a drone attack while transiting the northern Black Sea on July 8, 2026. Following the attack, the vessel was towed to Yalova, Türkiye. A technical assessment subsequently declared the ship beyond economic repair.
While non-Filipino crew members disembarked earlier, the six Filipino seafarers courageously remained on board to assist in manning and maintaining the vessel until a relief crew could take over.
On August 6, 2026, a Russian replacement crew formally assumed responsibility for the MT Blue, allowing the six Filipinos to disembark. Upon their arrival in Istanbul at approximately 3:00 a.m., they were met by Labor Attaché Adam Musa, who assisted with their welfare arrangements and transit through the airport.
The safe extraction and return of the crew were made possible through close coordination between the DMW—via the Migrant Workers Office (MWO) in Lebanon—the Philippine Consulate General in Istanbul, licensed manning agencies, and the vessel’s shipowners.
The seafarers arrived safely at Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila on August 7, 2026. Upon arrival, representatives from the DMW and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) provided immediate post-arrival assistance, including medical checkups and financial aid.
The DMW reassures the public and maritime community that it remains vigilant in monitoring global security situations. The department continues to work closely with Philippine diplomatic posts, international partners, shipowners, and manning agencies to prioritize the safety, welfare, and prompt repatriation of Filipino seafarers affected by geopolitical tensions and security threats worldwide.
