From inspiration to empowerment: Kuya Patrick Pidlawan’s journey with Grab redefines progress and inclusion

Grab shared the inspiring story of Kuya Patrick Pidlawan, a GrabFood Rider and Person With Disability (PWD), whose seven-year tenure with the platform illustrates the transformative power of flexible work, financial access, and inclusive community support.

Kuya Patrick, who previously earned a living as a tricycle driver, was initially inspired by the growing presence of Grab riders in his area. “I used to be a tricycle driver, but I see people using Grab. I was inspired. I said, should I try it too? I have a motorbike,” he recounts. This decision marked a turning point, offering him a path to greater stability and self-sufficiency.

For Kuya Patrick and his family, the benefits of the platform extend far beyond flexible hours. Grab’s commitment to rider welfare includes crucial financial and medical support, which has been instrumental in securing his family’s future.

“With Grab, I can support my family, and the time is flexible,” Patrick notes. “I’ve also been able to get a loan from them; the interest is not too high. There are also insurance benefits, including medical benefits. That’s why I’m satisfied here.”

This holistic support system has led to a profound shift in Kuya Patrick’s self-perception, moving his focus from his disability to his role as a dedicated provider.

“I don’t think of myself as a PWD anymore. It’s just a disability,” he states powerfully. “I also have a hard time, but I fight for my children. They are the ones who matter to me.”

Grab emphasizes that every booking contributes directly to the progress and empowerment of riders like Kuya Patrick.

A Grab executive said, “Kuya Patrick’s tenacity and success embody our mission to drive Southeast Asia forward by creating economic opportunities for everyone.” “His story reminds us that with the right tools—flexible hours, accessible financial services, and critical insurance—we can truly progress together, ensuring all our partners, including PWDs, can achieve their full potential.”

Grab remains committed to fostering an inclusive ecosystem where all partners are given the support and opportunity to thrive.
