Transport operators applaud Pres. Marcos Jr. for vital fuel subsidy rollout

Public utility vehicle (PUV) operators expressed deep gratitude to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. following the official rollout of the government’s fuel subsidy program at the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX) on Tuesday.

The initiative, designed to provide immediate financial relief amid volatile global oil prices, was met with praise from transport leaders who describe the aid as a critical lifeline for the industry.

During the President’s visit to oversee the distribution, initial subsidies were handed over to several transport stakeholders. The financial assistance structure includes:

  • Bus Operators: PhP10,000 per unit.

  • PUV Drivers: PhP5,000 each.

The program’s reach is comprehensive, covering jeepneys, buses, taxis, UV Express units, Transport Network Vehicle Services (TNVS), tricycles, and delivery services.

For Mercy Sta. Maria, owner of Mersan Snow White Transport Corporation, the subsidy arrives at a turning point. Operating a fleet of 20 buses, Sta. Maria noted that rising costs were beginning to threaten the frequency of their trips.

“This is a massive help. We are very grateful to our President for this support,” Sta. Maria stated. “Even when earnings are slim, we continue operations to ensure our drivers have a livelihood. We hope this kind of support continues.”

Similarly, Julius Balilo of Hi-Star Transport Inc. highlighted that the subsidy significantly lightens the operational “burden” on city bus companies. He commended the administration for recognizing the specific struggles of the bus sector and prioritizing their sustainability.

The rollout at PITX underscores the Marcos administration’s commitment to stabilizing the transport industry, ensuring that public mobility remains unhindered despite economic pressures. By providing direct cash aid, the government aims to prevent a reduction in available transport units and protect the workforce from the brunt of inflation.

For further information regarding the subsidy distribution schedule and eligibility, operators are encouraged to coordinate with the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB).
