On the sidelines of a recent ministerial gathering, high-ranking trade officials from the Philippines and the Republic of Türkiye met to chart an ambitious path forward for bilateral trade, investment, and strategic economic cooperation.
Dr. Ceferino S. Rodolfo, Undersecretary of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and Managing Head of the Board of Investments (BOI), held a highly productive bilateral discussion with Minister Ömer Bolat of the Turkish Ministry of Trade. The meeting underscored a mutual commitment to deepen economic relations and unlock new commercial opportunities between the two nations.
A major breakthrough of the discussion was the shared intent to resume the Philippines-Türkiye Joint Committee on Economic and Technical Cooperation (JCETC). The JCETC serves as the premier bilateral mechanism to address trade barriers, streamline investment procedures, and spark joint industrial initiatives.
The leaders identified several key sectors of mutual advantage poised for immediate collaboration:
-
Defense: Leveraging technology transfer and industrial capabilities.
-
Agriculture: Enhancing food security through smart farming solutions and expanded agricultural trade.
-
Manufacturing and Services: Strengthening supply chain resilience and capitalizing on the Philippines’ robust IT-BPM and engineering services. “The synergy between the Philippines and Türkiye has immense untapped potential,” said Undersecretary Rodolfo. “By reviving the JCETC, we are creating a predictable, dynamic framework for our businesses to thrive, innovate, and expand in each other’s regions.”
To translate these high-level talks into tangible commercial outcomes, Minister Bolat confirmed an upcoming high-level business mission from Türkiye to the Philippines. This mission will allow Turkish industry leaders to interface directly with Philippine conglomerates and government agencies, exploring joint ventures in infrastructure, manufacturing, and technology.
The strategic meeting was also attended by key officials who will drive the implementation of these initiatives, including Turkish Deputy Minister of Trade Mustafa Tuzcu and Commercial Counsellor Katrina Banzon of the DTI’s Philippine Trade and Investment Center (PTIC).
